Hi, I’m

Chirag Chawla

Software Development Engineer

Backend engineer building scalable, secure microservices across healthcare, fintech, and public-safety systems.

About

A bit about me

I’m a backend-focused software engineer with 6+ years building scalable, secure systems in Java and Spring Boot. I’ve architected microservices for high-stakes domains — healthcare integrations, global promotional pricing, identity & access management, and next-generation emergency alerts.

I enjoy owning architecture end-to-end: translating ambiguous, cross-functional requirements into clean domain models and APIs, then driving them through to delivery. I care about performance, reliability, and compliance — whether that’s meeting 100% of HIPAA requirements or cutting API latency by 90%.

Along the way I’ve led backend workstreams, mentored junior engineers, and been recognized with several awards for technical leadership and delivery.

Mayo Clinic — Healthcare Integration Platform

    • Architected backend services for the billing, locations, and product-catalog domains of a healthcare integration platform, defining domain models and service interaction flows in Java and Spring Boot.
    • Partnered with clinical operations and product leaders to translate ambiguous workflows into backend designs, owning architectural decisions from discovery through API rollout.
    • Built secure data-exchange APIs and PHI-safe schemas between internal microservices and Epic (the EHR platform used by most major U.S. hospitals), passing 100% of HIPAA compliance requirements.
    • Served as backend tech lead across 3 parallel workstreams, driving technical direction with engineering, product, and clinical stakeholders — designs reviewed and approved by the platform architect.
    • Earned an Excellence Award for technical leadership and foundational architectural contributions.

    Promo5k — Walmart’s Promotional Pricing Engine

    • Built Walmart’s global promotional pricing engine, automating festive and campaign price updates, reducing manual intervention by 80% and ensuring compliance across 3 international markets.
    • Engineered scalable backend workflows to update 10K+ SKUs in near real-time, cutting latency from 24 hours to under 4 hours.
    • Enabled a 15% uplift in seasonal campaign revenue by accelerating and stabilizing global promotional rollouts.
    • Led sprint demos, mentored junior engineers, and conducted peer code reviews, improving team delivery quality and velocity.

J.P. Morgan Chase — Corporate & Investment Bank (CIB)

    • Migrated 25+ legacy apps to ForgeRock CIAM, reducing authentication latency by 40% and centralizing access control.
    • Upgraded 10+ services from Java 8 to 17 and Spring Boot 2.7 to 3.x, improving cold-start time by 35%.
    • Rolled out blue-green deployments with A/B testing on EKS, eliminating downtime during releases.
    • Integrated backend services with Mercury via REST APIs, enabling secure data flows for 2M+ identity records.
    • Ensured 100% on-time delivery across 3 quarters; awarded a Spot Award for independently leading IAM modernization.
